Your Feet Change During Pregnancy — Your Shoes Should Too
Pregnancy brings significant changes to the feet and lower body. Swelling, weight gain, shifting center of gravity, and hormonal changes that loosen ligaments all affect how shoes fit and feel. Here's how to choose footwear that keeps you comfortable and safe through every trimester.
How Pregnancy Affects Your Feet
- Swelling (edema): Fluid retention causes feet to swell, especially in the third trimester and at the end of the day.
- Arch flattening: The hormone relaxin loosens ligaments, which can cause arches to flatten and feet to lengthen — sometimes permanently by half a size or more.
- Weight gain: Additional body weight increases pressure on the feet and joints.
- Balance changes: A shifting center of gravity makes low, stable footwear safer than heels.
What to Look for
Adjustable Fit
Lace-up shoes, Velcro closures, and adjustable straps allow you to customize the fit as swelling changes throughout the day and across trimesters.
Wide Toe Box
Swollen feet need room. A wide, roomy toe box prevents painful compression. Avoid narrow or pointed toe boxes entirely during pregnancy.
Arch Support & Cushioning
As arches flatten under increased weight, proper arch support becomes critical. Extra cushioning absorbs the increased impact of carrying additional weight.
Low, Stable Heel & Slip Resistance
High heels shift weight forward and increase fall risk. A flat with arch support or low block heel is safest. A slip-resistant outsole provides extra security as balance changes.
Sizing Tips
- Measure your feet at the end of the day when swelling is at its peak
- Consider going up half a size or a full size to accommodate swelling
- Get remeasured postpartum — feet are often permanently larger after pregnancy
