White Sneakers Look Best When They're Actually White
White sneakers are a wardrobe staple — but they require regular cleaning to stay fresh. Here's how to clean every material properly.
Canvas & Fabric Sneakers
- Remove laces and insoles
- Brush off loose dirt with a dry brush
- Mix warm water with a small amount of mild laundry detergent
- Scrub with a soft brush in circular motions
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth
- Air dry — never use a dryer or direct heat
Leather & Synthetic Leather Sneakers
- Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove surface dirt
- Apply a small amount of leather cleaner or mild soap to a soft cloth
- Wipe in gentle circular motions
- Wipe clean with a fresh damp cloth
- Allow to air dry, then apply leather conditioner
Rubber Soles & Midsoles
A magic eraser (dampened) removes most scuffs and yellowing from rubber soles almost instantly. For stubborn yellowing, apply white non-gel toothpaste, scrub with an old toothbrush, and rinse.
Laces
Remove and soak in warm water with a small amount of bleach or laundry detergent for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and air dry. Or simply replace them — new laces make a huge difference.
Prevention Tips
- Apply a sneaker protector spray before first wear
- Wipe down after every wear with a damp cloth
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
