Proper Storage Extends the Life of Every Pair
How you store your shoes when you're not wearing them has a significant impact on how long they last and how good they look. Here's how to do it right.
General Storage Rules
- Keep away from direct sunlight: UV light fades colors and yellows midsoles and soles
- Store in a cool, dry place: Heat and humidity accelerate material breakdown and promote mold
- Allow shoes to air out before storing: Never store damp shoes — moisture causes odor and mold
- Use shoe trees: Cedar shoe trees absorb moisture, neutralize odor, and maintain the shape of the upper
By Shoe Type
Leather Shoes & Boots
Use cedar shoe trees. Store in breathable dust bags or original boxes. Apply leather conditioner before long-term storage to prevent cracking.
Sneakers
Store in original boxes or clear stackable boxes. Silica gel packets inside the box control humidity and prevent yellowing. Avoid plastic bags — they trap moisture.
Suede & Nubuck
Store in breathable dust bags away from other shoes that could transfer color. Never store in plastic.
Heels & Dress Shoes
Store upright or in individual compartments to prevent heel damage. Heel caps protect pointed heels from chipping.
Boots
Use boot shapers or stuff with newspaper to maintain the shaft shape. Store upright — never folded or on their side.
Long-Term Storage Tips
- Clean thoroughly before storing for a season
- Apply appropriate protector (leather conditioner, suede spray) before storage
- Check stored shoes every few months for mold or material issues
