How to Waterproof Your Shoes — Protect Any Material

Waterproofing Extends the Life of Any Shoe

Whether it's leather, suede, canvas, or mesh — waterproofing your shoes protects them from rain, spills, and moisture damage. Here's how to do it right for every material.

Waterproofing by Material

Leather

Use a wax-based waterproofing cream or spray. Apply a thin, even coat, allow to absorb, then buff with a soft cloth. Reapply every 4–6 weeks with regular wear or after heavy rain exposure.

Suede & Nubuck

Use a suede-specific waterproofing spray. Hold the can 6–8 inches from the surface and apply in light, even coats. Allow to dry completely (30–60 minutes) before wearing. Reapply regularly — suede loses protection faster than leather.

Canvas & Fabric

Use a silicone-based waterproofing spray. Apply evenly and allow to dry. Canvas absorbs water quickly without treatment — waterproofing is especially important for canvas sneakers.

Mesh & Synthetic

Use a fluoropolymer-based spray designed for technical fabrics. These penetrate the material without blocking breathability.

Application Tips

  • Always clean shoes before waterproofing — dirt prevents the product from bonding
  • Apply in a well-ventilated area
  • Test on a small hidden area first to check for color change
  • Reapply after every 10–15 wears or when water stops beading on the surface
