What Makes a Shoe Sustainable?
Materials
- Recycled materials: Uppers made from recycled plastic bottles, ocean plastic, or recycled rubber
- Natural materials: Organic cotton, natural rubber, cork, and responsibly sourced leather
- Plant-based alternatives: Pineapple leather (Piñatex), mushroom leather (Mylo), and apple leather are emerging alternatives to animal and synthetic leather

Longevity
The most sustainable shoe is one that lasts. A well-made shoe worn for 5 years has a far lower environmental impact than three cheap pairs that each last 18 months. Invest in quality and care for your shoes properly.
Repairability
Shoes with Goodyear welt construction can be resoled multiple times, dramatically extending their lifespan. Cemented (glued) construction is not resoleable.
